How to Tell Plastic Rice From Real Rice
“Plastic rice” refers to fake rice grains allegedly made from materials like polyethylene, sometimes mixed with real rice to cut costs. While most reported cases turn out to be misunderstandings—such as poor-quality or improperly stored rice—it’s still useful to know how to identify suspicious rice.
Simple Tests to Detect Fake Rice
1. Water Test
How to do it:
Fill a glass with water.
Add a tablespoon of rice and stir.
What to expect:
Real rice will sink.
Fake rice may float (though some low-quality real rice may also float).
2. Hot Oil Test
How to do it:
Heat a small amount of oil in a pan.
Add a few grains of rice.
What to expect:
Real rice will brown naturally.
Plastic rice may melt, smell chemical, or clump.
3. Burn Test
